On Being a Blue Rider (Independent Learning Lesson)

Population: 10-12th grade advanced painting class with background in drawing and composition.

Objectives:

  1. Identify various artists and purposes in art.
  2. Interpret principles of design and apply them in personal artworks.
  3. Create works of art using watercolor and alternative materials.
  4. Develop an awareness of different movements in art.

Anticapatory Set: If tomorrow any of us were sent to war, what would we want to leave the world? Two artists from this group, the Blue Riders, died in the Great War, the War to End All Wars: World War I. Auguste Macke and Franz Marc, both members of the movement we will study, left their lasting impression on the world of art and the world at large. If they had lived to make art well into their eighties or nineties, the world might be a different place. So if the roles were reversed, if it were you who might have to go to war soon, what would you leave behind as a marker for your immortality?

Modeling/Procedure: Teacher will pass out and discuss guidelines for the Blue Rider Abstract assignment, as discussed in the contract signed previously. Students are to use their experience with the Powerpoint excursion to catapult them into the abstract assignment. Technology: Microsoft Powerpoint presentation highlighting the Blue Rider Group.

Active Engagement: Through the use of the presentation, students will identify ideas or influences they would like to use for the Abstract assignment.

Evaluation: Pieces will be graded according to participation in critiques, originality, risk-taking, effort, and relation of their artwork to an aspect of the Blue Rider's works. This will be done through a one to two page written assignment.

Contract Handout

During the next few months we will be reviewing many new ways to paint in watercolor, and plenty of new ways to do it. But what you paint is up to you! Select one option from Non-Objective, Abstraction and Realism, or write down your own idea to review with me. List your selections in the bottom row.

Non-Objective
Abstraction
Realism
Create a collage by ripping a piece of paper you've painted on. Not all the materials need to be that painting alone.
Paint a still life from several vantage points, mixing all together.
Paint a landscape or portrait from a picture.
Create a piece about a song you enjoy. It should not be literal, but reflect the mood and sounds in the music.
Take several pictures of landscapes or buildings and create an impossible landscape.
Link up with someone: paint that person painting.
Take an intense emotional experience in your life; turn it into pure color and shape.
Write a poem about a piece you've created, or select a poem you've written and create a piece about it.
Sketch and paint a one or two point perspective keeping to color and detail.
